Do GPS trackers need a subscription? The true-cost guide

Most GPS pet trackers do — and the subscription, not the device, is most of what you will ever pay. This guide totals both, so the comparison is honest before you buy.

Why the sticker price misleads

A tracker that costs little upfront can require a monthly cellular plan for as long as you use it. Over three to five years, that plan commonly exceeds the device price several times over. Comparing devices without their plans is comparing half-prices.

Comparison — price comparisons

How these figures were sourced. Prices checked 2026-10-04 from manufacturer stores. Fi pricing verified at live checkout 2026-10-04; membership is charged at activation, first term discounted, renews at $189/yr. Totals use each product's cheapest annual (1-year) plan — for Fi, the $99 discounted first term in year 1, then the $189/yr renewal rate; other products renew at their annual rate each year; multi-year prepay discounts are not baked in (see the notes under the table).

Totals = device + cheapest annual plan renewed at the same rate each year, per dog, before tax. Multi-year prepay discounts are not included — they lower some 5-year totals substantially (e.g. FitBark's 5-year plan would cut its Year 5 total to $274.95, and Tractive Premium 5-year prepay cuts a DOG 6 to $379). Excludes activation fees, optional add-ons, accessories, and plan price changes.

* Life360: the $99 device price includes 12 months of membership; the $99.99/yr Silver renewal is per household, not per dog, and covers up to 2 trackers. Life360's own explainer also mentions a $3.99 activation fee for each additional tracker (first tracker waived), which is not included in these totals. In the calculator below, a 3-dog Life360 household is priced on the Gold tier ($169.99/yr, covers 3–5 trackers) from year 2.

† Sale prices in effect at the manufacturer stores on 2026-10-04: FitBark device $34.95 (regular $69.95 — if the sale ends, add $35 to every FitBark total); Halo Collar 5 device $524 (MSRP $599 — if the sale ends, add $75 to every Halo total).

Fi pricing verified at live checkout 2026-10-04; membership is charged at activation, first term discounted, renews at $189/yr. The device is paid separately at checkout (Mini $99 / Series 3+ $129 / Ultra $299, hardware only); the membership is not charged at purchase — the 1-year plan is $99 for the discounted first term, then renews at $189/yr.

SpotOn Nova is a GPS containment-fence collar and is not in the calculator below: its core fencing works with no plan at all ($999 flat), while escape alerts and live tracking require the optional Tracking Plan ($101.88/yr) — a choice a single calculator total would misrepresent. Both variants are shown in the table. A second SpotOn collar is $100 off ($899).

True-Cost Calculator

Pick a product, how many dogs you are covering, and how long you realistically keep a tracker. The calculator totals device plus subscription for the whole household. Most plans are per dog — but not all: Life360's membership is per household and covers up to 2 trackers, and the calculator models that difference rather than just multiplying.

Prices checked 2026-10-04 from manufacturer stores. Fi pricing verified at live checkout 2026-10-04; membership is charged at activation, first term discounted ($99 for the 1-year plan), renews at $189/yr. FitBark and Halo totals use their 2026-10-04 sale device prices (see the † note above the calculator). Uses the cheapest annual plan — year 1 at the first-term rate where a brand discounts it (Fi), then the renewal rate; multi-year prepay discounts are not included. Excludes tax, accessories, activation fees, and future price changes.

How to use these numbers

  • Compare totals, not devices. Rank products on the 3-year column — a realistic ownership window — not the sticker price.
  • Check what the subscription includes. Coverage area, update frequency, and whether a plan is required for the device to function at all differ by brand; verify on the manufacturer's terms page before buying.
  • Multi-dog households usually multiply everything — with one exception. On most platforms each dog needs its own device and its own plan. Life360 is the exception: one membership covers up to 2 trackers, which is why it pulls away on cost for two-dog homes. Use the calculator's dog selector to see the difference.
  • No-subscription alternatives exist (Bluetooth and radio trackers), but with far shorter range. They suit different situations, not the same one more cheaply.
